The New Class, Summer 2009

Today, fifteen students begin SIT’s MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.   In addition to English, they speak 15 other languages, including these

  • 18%  Arabic, French
  • 15%  Spanish
  • 9%  Russian
  • 6%  Korean, Portuguese
  • 3%  Czech, German, Kiswahili, Loma, Malagasy, Mandarin Chinese, Quechua, Ukrainian

They include citizens of Jordan, Kenya, Sudan, and the United States.

They bring with them other advanced degrees:

  • 4 master’s degrees in other subjects and a PhD.

The median age is 37 (half older, half younger).

And — maybe for the first time ever! — an SIT graduate degree has a majority of men: 60%.

This new class joins the returning class who conclude their coursework with a second summer.
